Project summary (English)
 
The project aims at developing the legislative framework for wine from organic viticulture.
Data about currently applied practices, consumer and market needs in significant areas will be gathered in significant wine producing areas of EU, new member states and accession countries.
Test series with suitable and innovative technologies to improve the quality of wines from organic viticulture, allowing using a low level of sulfites will be conducted and validated on selected pilot farms.
A participatory approach with stakeholder involvement on national and EU levels will be followed, ensuring a high acceptance of the proposed legislative framework.
A code of best practices and an integrated environment assessment tool shall give guidance for wine-producers to produce high quality wine while limiting their impact on the environment.
The projects has the following objectives:
- to identify practices applied in organic viticulture and wine making in typical EU and AC wine producing areas and evaluate their impact on environment and wine quality (WP2);
- to identify buying motives and organic wine markets needs in order to address labeling provisions and communication strategies (WP 2);
- to develop innovative wine-making technologies fitting to the organic concept and improving organic wine quality with particular regard to sulphites reduction (WP3);
- to test on-farm innovative technologies in order to assess their practicability and acceptability (WP4); to develop a code of best organic wine-making practices and recommendations for the development of EU regulation 2092/91 and policy support measures for the organic wine sector through a participatory approach (WP5).
The project partnership consists of 11 partners from 4 countries (I, F, D, and CH), a SME and a European Organization, covering different disciplines, stakeholder views and experiences. Through IFOAM EU Group additional countries will be involved (E, PT, GR, HU, BG).
